Jones, Samuel
(d. 1732)
   Thought to have been the natural child of Hugh Machell of Crackenthorpe Hall, Appleby, Cumbria. He started as a clerk and from 1709 to 1731 was queen's searcher in the custom house of Whitby, North Yorkshire. His Poetical Miscellanies were published in 1714. Whitby: A Poem Occasioned by Mr. Andrew Long's Recovery from the Jaundice by Drinking of Whitby Spaw [spa] Waters was published in 1718. Jones died at his house in Grape Lane, Whitby, and was buried in the parish church of St. Mary. Some of his other poems: "Poverty, in Imitation of Milton," "The Force of Love," "The Ploughman, in Imitation of Milton."
